Getting a Second Opinion
Did you know that you can get a second opinion after being diagnosed with breast cancer?

Getting a second opinion just means that you meet with another doctor to hear their perspective on your breast cancer diagnosis and treatment plan. Afterwards, you can decide if you want to return to your first doctor or continue with the second doctor. While it takes a little bit more work to find and schedule with another doctor, getting a second opinion can help make sure that your treatment plan is the best possible plan for you.

Here are a few reasons why getting a second opinion is helpful:
1. Confirm your TNBC diagnosis and explore your treatment options.
Different oncologists or specialists may have different interpretations of biopsy results or staging, leading to differences in treatment recommendations. A second opinion can help confirm your initial diagnosis and make sure that the proposed treatment plan is appropriate and matches current medical standards.
2. Validate the proposed treatment plan.
Validating your proposed treatment plan is important, especially in complex cases or when considering aggressive treatments like surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, or targeted therapies. Different oncologists may have different expertise, access to clinical trials, or insights into emerging therapies that could influence the recommended course of action.
3. Gain peace of mind and confidence.
A triple negative breast cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming. Seeking a second opinion allows you to feel more informed and empowered in making decisions about your health.
You can get a second opinion at a number of different points, including:
  • At the time of diagnosis: To ensure the accuracy of the initial diagnosis and to explore different treatment options from the outset.
  • Before starting treatment: To confirm the recommended treatment plan and consider alternative approaches, if necessary.
  • During or after treatment: If there are concerns about treatment response, side effects, or if the disease progresses unexpectedly.
Getting a second opinion takes a few steps:
  • Research and choose a specialist: Look for oncologists or cancer centers with expertise in triple negative breast cancer treatment and a reputation for providing second opinions.
  • Gather medical records: Collect copies of all of your relevant medical records, including pathology reports, imaging studies, and treatment plans, to share with the second opinion provider.
  • Schedule a consultation: Contact the chosen specialist or cancer center to schedule an appointment for an evaluation and discussion of your case.
  • Discuss findings and recommendations: After receiving the second opinion, compare it with the initial assessment and treatment plan. This helps in making an informed decision about the best course of action.
